The leader, artist, friend, and clown

Philip was an incredible force of creativity and connection, touching countless lives across Portland’s performance scene as an artist, a leader, an administrator, a teacher and a clown.

It is in honor of his vision, his hard work, and his boundless joy that we continue to imagine a place for the performing arts to thrive in Portland.

Below are just a few of the roles Philip played:

The Leader

From 2015-2021 Philip was the Producing Artistic Director of CoHo Productions, where he helped countless companies, local producers and touring artists bring their work to life. Philip was a tireless advocate for the performing arts in Portland.

Philip also worked administratively as a company member at Third Rail, helping to grow the company into the vibrant part of Portland’s ecosystem that it remains today.

Philip was also the Executive Director of PETE’s Institute for Contemporary Performance training program, helping to found the year-long training program and administer it during its first 5 years.

Previously, Philip was the Executive Director of Portland Actors Conservatory. His responsibilities included administrative and operational oversight in regards to compliance with National, State and local agencies, budgeting and finance, origination and disbursement of federal financial aid, administrative staff, fundraising, development and marketing. His leadership was instrumental in securing accreditation from the National Association of Schools of Theatre in 2008.

The Artist

Philip was an actor and a director based in Portland. His directing credits included work with Third Rail Repertory Theatre, Hand2Mouth, Theatre Vertigo, Miracle Theatre, Nomadic Theatre and Portland Actors Conservatory, all in Portland Oregon, and Oberon Theatre Ensemble, Expanded Arts and The Sonia Moore Studio of Theatre in New York City. He also directed with The Tampa Historical Society and School is Fun Productions in Florida. He worked extensively in devised work and play development.

As an actor he appeared at Lincoln CenterThe Hartford StageThe Civic Theatre of Central Florida, and in Portland with Third Rail, Artists Repertory Theatre, Shaking the Tree, and Imago Theatre.

The Teacher

Philip was a teacher in PETE’s Institute for Contemporary Performance, which he helped found, at Portland State University where he taught movement and clown, and as part of Third Rail Rep’s mentorship program. Previously, Philip taught at the Portland Actor’s Conservatory, and The Sonia Moore Studio of Theatre.

The Clown

Philip founded the CoHo Clown cohort, and was passionately involved in a long-term research project investigating the use of clown in relationship to devising, classic literature, and ensemble practice. With the CoHo Clown Cohort he created Philip’s Glass Menagerie, Witch Hunt, and Beethoven & Chopin Meet the Bride of Frankenstein.
